Good, Good Enough, and Great

The other day I was putting some finishing touches on a logo for a client. The client said "Zac, you're doing a great job!" I like hearing's what I want to hear after I've done work for anybody. It doesn't matter who I hear it from, it could be a boss, a co-worker, a client, a friend I'm doing a favour for, or my dad.

It's actually my dad that instilled this work ethic in me. When I was a kid he would say to me, "if you're going to do a job, do the best job you can, or don't do it all". These words are top of mind when I work on anything. This is why I am a perfectionist.

I don't want to do good, or just good enough work, I want to do great work. That's why books like, Good to Great appeal to me, and people like Michael Bungay Stanier author of Do More Great Work.

In my early twenties I worked at a retail store as a sales associate. One night we were cleaning the store before close and my co-worker was vacuuming the carpet. He did a quick job, and I asked him how it was going, and he said "it looks good enough to me...", when I hear things like that I'm shocked, why? because you would never hear those words come out of my mouth.

Looks good enough to me, sounds like...I know I did a half-hearted job, and I don't care.

Good means there is always room for improvement.

Great work is  something you can be proud of, keep striving to do great work every day.
